Cyclophosphamide is primarily indicated to treat certain types of cancer like multiple myeloma, leukemia, lymphomas, eye cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and neuroblastoma. Cyclophosphamide is a well- known brand of Cytoxan. Apart from these conditions, it is also intended for the treatment of nephrotic (kidney) syndrome in children.

How does Cyclophosphamide work?

Generic Cyclophosphamide belongs to a category of drugs called alkylating agents. It acts by sticking to one of the cancer cell's DNA strands. DNA plays a significant role in the growth and development of cancer cells and it is a genetic code of all animal and plant cells. It controls the whole working of cancer cells.

Cyclophosphamide is an Anti-neoplastic agent, which exert its functions by inhibiting the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Contraindications of Cyclophosphamide

Do not take Cyclophosphamide in case of-

  • Hypersensitivity towards generic Cyclophosphamide
  • Kidney or liver dysfunction
  • If you have suppressed bone marrow function
  • In case of pregnancy or lactation
  • In case of breathing disorders or asthma

Drug interactions of Cyclophosphamide

  • Allopurinol or Zyloprim enhances the ability of Cyclophosphamide and decreases the production of blood cells.
  • Adriamycin increases the occurrence of heart disease with Cyclophosphamide.
  • Blood thinners like Warfarin, Heparin and Coumadin increase the therapeutic action of Cyclophosphamide
  • Cipro or Quinolones reduces the effectiveness of Cyclophosphamide

Storage condition of Cyclophosphamide

  • Cyclophosphamide injection should be stored at the room temperature 30 0C and away from the direct contact of heat, sunlight and moisture.
  • Keep this injection out of reach of children.

Dosing of Cyclophosphamide

The normal initial recommended a dose of Cyclophosphamide is 40to50mg/kg. This injection should be administered intravenously (I/V) for 2to5 days. The dosing of this drug totally depends on the individual's age, body weight, surface area and diseased condition.

Negative effects of Cyclophosphamide

Most commonly seen adverse effects of Cyclophosphamide are skin rashes, itching, irritation, inflammation and swelling at the site of injection.

Severe adverse effects of Cyclophosphamide are mouth sores, painful urination, extreme fatigue, unusual bleeding, bruising and blood in your stool.

Special safety and precautions

  • Do not take Aspirin containing drugs with Cyclophosphamide.
  • Do not receive any kind of immunization and live vaccine while using Cyclophosphamide.
  • Avoid smoking and intake of alcohol with Cyclophosphamide as it may increase the risk of adverse effects.
  • Breastfeeding or pregnant mothers should avoid the use of this injection.
  • Children under the age of 12 years should not use this injection.
